It wasn’t that long ago the state of Oregon would produce, on average, 5-10 division 1 kids per year. Over the last half decade things have drastically changed, with the Three Rivers League becoming the unquestioned dominant 6A conference in Oregon.

So much so that it was worth taking a look at the D1 projected athletes playing in the TRL this season. Breaking down the numbers we see 13 kids already offered or committed, with close to 20 additional athletes who will most likely play at that level.

To put this into perspective, Lakeridge and Canby would be front runners to win the GVC (6A Salem League) IMO. You can reference the Battle Prep preseason rankings below, where five Three Rivers teams are ranked in the state’s top 10. Add to this Newberg who will potentially put out their best squad in school history.

The coaches that lead these schools deserve a lot of credit. From the youth on up these organizations are run as well as any in the Northwest. After this season you could have 4 head coaches with state title rings (Chris Miller- West Linn 2016? Steve Coury-Lake O, Greg Lawrence-Sherwood, Craig Ruecker-Tigard).

Coach Zernickow of Tualatin took an 0-9 Timberwolves program to the second round of the playoffs in 2015, finishing (8-3). Elvis Akpla of Lakeridge is one of the best and brightest young coaches anywhere in the region. Give him a few years and the Pacers will once again be an Oregon power.

One of the biggest challenges for each team will be to stay healthy. On top of playing brutal non conference schedules, each week will be a battle within the TRL. With 30+ D1 projected athletes this could very well be the best conference, top to bottom, ever to represent the state.
