If we are talking programs and players who’s stock is rising quickly, look no further then Eugene, where Churchill is (8-0) and Marshaun Tucker Jr (6-2 160 19′) is looking like one of the top WR’s in the state.
As of right now head coach AJ Robinson has his guys considered a 5A state title favorite. That said as the Lancers haven’t been a traditional power over the years, with Sheldon typically being the talk of the town. The Irish are still loaded with nationally ranked recruits up and down the board, but no one should sleep on Churchill.
Prior to the year WSU commit Myles Green-Richards made the move from South Eugene. Add to this 6-4 225 Sr. TE Jax Arnold who is one of the more underrated kids in Oregon, and Junior QB Jack Blackburn who has been absolutely torching opponents with 29 TD’s to 3 INT’s.
All of this said as Marshaun Tucker Jr has blown up, averaging 22.8 yards per catch, and leading the team with 501 total receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. Many remember his father, Marshaun Tucker, as one of the Ducks who helped put the team on the map back in 2000. His 50 receptions for 871 yards and 6 TDs were part of that special season.
Speaking on his team and what it’s like playing for his dad Tucker Jr says, “We want to finish the season undefeated and win a state championship”. Adding, ” My dad has really helped me to understand the game at a high level and expects a lot out of me.. He’s my position coach so we get to work everyday, and he makes me and everyone else that he coaches better.”
Separate from the credibility his name brings, Marshaun possesses intangibles that can’t be taught, with his overall size, speed and athleticism. Watch his film and you see a kid that requires a consistent double team if you wan’t to contain him. This is huge as the Lancers are able to spread the ball around on a consistent basis.
Fellow D1 WR Green- Richards has hauled in 28 passes for 445 yards and 9 TD’s on the year. Senior Lucas Schwin has 22 receptions for 416 yards and 6 TDs. The big Tight End Arnold has caught 15 balls for 271 yards and 7 touchdowns. QB Blackburn has been having a field day spreading the ball around to all.
Green-Richards broke out on the 7v7 circuit as part of EForce (Oregon Breed) during the off season and hasn’t let up since. Referencing Myles and what he brings to the table Marshaun says, “Playing opposite Myles has made me and the team better overall.. He’s such a competitor on offense and defense as we go at each other during 1 on 1’s daily.”
If things play out Churchill could meet Crescent Valley deep in the playoffs or in the state championship. This would open up the possibility of the nation’s #1 ranked athlete, Talanoa Hufanga of CV, guarding Green-Richards and Tucker Jr.
There wouldn’t be an empty seat as Tucker is an unquestioned D1 kid as well. Exciting times for Churchill, Marshaun and the entire community. We will keep you updated as the kids from Churchill are legit.
