One of Oregon’s top linebackers and overall returning players for the class of 2017 is Tanner Smith (6-2 235 LB/TE) of Oregon City. The two sport standout earned 1st team all league honors on both sides of the ball, also racking up 2nd team all state accolades from his Tight End position.
Tanner will be a three year all conference LB, and a favorite to win Mt Hood Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2016. Smith has played Varsity ball since his freshman season in both football and basketball. He is a team captain in each sport, also excelling in the classroom with a 3.9 GPA. In summary the kid gets it done on and off the field.
Smith blew up this off season training with EForce and former Duck Linebacker Brent Haberly. His ability to read and overall understanding of the game, puts him in an elite category, in comparison to his peers . He is currently on multiple D1 boards with a stock that is rising quickly.
Speaking on the OC backer Haberly says, “Tanner is very enjoyable to work with… He is a yes sir, no sir type of athlete, and as good as any linebacker in the area.” Kind words from an individual that excelled at the position for the Ducks and is maybe the state’s top LB coach.
Moving forward Tanner will need to stay healthy for a Pioneers team that graduates a talented and deep 2016 class. He will rarely leave the field so endurance will be important. QB DeQuahn Lee 17′, CB/ATH Teron Bradford 18′, LB/S Ethan Kassebaum 18′, and up and coming 2019 star Zee Lee will all be influential and ranked some of Oregon’s top athletes.
Top to bottom Oregon City reps one of the top football programs in the state. They will need Smith’s leadership this season as the team will be relatively young. Expect to hear the name often as T Smith is a player.
